We are so excited to begin our unit studies for the 2019-2020 school year! I decided to create a variety of 4-8 week units, beginning with this America mini unit. These units will be provided for free on our blog and will contain themed collections of books, activities, and printables. Many of these will be free resources, but I will also include links to any paid resources that we use so that you can piece together a unit that best fits your child! I plan to add in any free new printable packs that I create as well. We would love for you to join us! Below are affiliate links for your convenience.

This unit will run until the end of the month and we will explore topics such as American history, national symbols, important presidents, money, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, 4th of July, and voting. Originally I had planned to have everything listed within each unit blog post, but I decided to make Pinterest boards for the activities. I am a really visual person and I thought the boards would also make it easier to locate activities you see on our instagram account.

Here is a list of the books we will be using throughout the unit! Many of them we own, but the others I found at our local library:

1 // Our Flag Was Still There
2 // The Star Spangled Banner
3 // America
4 // Our Flag
5 // I Am Abraham Lincoln
6 // The 50 States
7 // An Inconvenient Alphabet
8 // Maps
9 // God Bless Our Country
10 // George Washington
11 // Our 50 States
12 // Abraham Lincoln
13 // National Parks of the USA
14 // The Star Spangled Banner
15 // Red, White, and Boom!
16 // One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote
17 // This is America
18 // Pie is for Sharing
19 // The Berenstain Bears and the Big Election
20 // Presidents’ Day
21 // A is for Abigail
22 // Abe Lincoln: The Boy Who Loved Books

I plan to share more about our daily schedule for the upcoming year, but overall it is very “general” and relaxed. My good friend Chelsea created these Homeschool Planning Sheets and I love them! You can edit them to be anything you need them to be. I add our weekly subjects/activities at the top of the columns and fill in our plans. I first fell in love with these because they allow me to write down everything I want to get done and then our goal is just to finish by the end of the week. If something comes up, we don’t sweat it – we just know to pick up a little extra on another day.

All of the activities that we will complete throughout this unit can be found on the pinterest board below:

I have also taken the time to save any additional activities or ideas that I have come up with to a separate board:

My girls are nearly 4 and 5.5 at this point, so some of our chosen activities may not fit your child. Easier/more challenging projects can be found on that additional pinterest board or by simply searching pinterest. Our units will be heavily focused on nature, history, geography and social skills. We supplement math and phonics for both girls. Our current curriculums are:

Math //
Math Lessons For A Living Education (Level K + Level 1)

Phonics + Reading //
Dash Into Reading
Get Ready For The Code
Explode The Code

We add in a few other fun resources which I will share in a post about our daily/weekly schedule! I am really happy with the curriculums listed above. They are simple, inexpensive and have been really successful with both girls.

So there you have it! We hope you enjoy this mini unit + be sure to follow along with us on instagram (:
